EP 46: Sensuality, Sexuality And Pleasure With Cynthia Kim-Eumie Shockley
Meet Cynthia Kim-Eumie Shockley, a mindfulness facilitator, yoga teacher, and pole dance instructor, who uses freestyle movement as a tool to help women reconnect to their bodies and sensuality. Though pole dancing was her first step into the world of wellness, she has since launched her own business, Mighty Mama Wellness, whose mission is to help you “know your power” and “live your legacy”.
Cynthia has always had a passion for helping the communities around her. She spent the early years of her career working with children. Teaching mindfulness fundamentals and emotional regulation was one of her favorite parts of that job. One technique she found particularly helpful was “smell the soup” which gives kids a moment to pause to add their favorite ingredients to their “bowl” and then take a deep breath or “smell the soup”. She also notes how the Rules of Regulation can be a great way to help kids identify their feelings.
However, Cynthia quickly came to realize that her true impact came from interacting with mothers and female mentors by helping them tap into their better selves so that they can make a much greater impact on their children, their community, and the world around them.
She emphasizes how there is this loss of identity within motherhood, and that in pursuing motherhood and caring for their family, many end up letting go parts of themselves. Her sensual movement classes are designed to help reconnect women to their inner voice and seek self-pleasure.
Cynthia describes her personal experience undergoing her own sensual movement journey, and how she used freestyle dance and movement to heal from her past trauma. She used pole dancing as the gateway to say no to the performative things in life, take back her power, and pursue her own passions in life.
Though the journey seems bumpy and unsafe, she began learning to trust her body by paying attention to her physical reactions in her body, looking for any tension or buzz of excitement. Once she started building a stronger relationship with her intuition, she began trusting herself, her body and confidence.
Cynthia continues her work with women through her ‘Permission to Play’ program, which promotes staying present in the moment to ‘play’ through free movement. The series invites healers to lead a discussion surrounding important topics like inner child work or gender roles, which are immediately followed by a physical sensual movement session that integrates the lesson and discussion to really embody the lesson and play in that moment.
