Ep 35: Developmental Milestones, Anticipating Birth and Lizz Adams

It was so fun to hear Lizz’s excitement and anticipation about the upcoming birth of her daughter and it made me reflect back to some of the similar feelings I had a little over a year ago!

Montessori school, self-image, and sleep habits. We dig into how Montessori school and ‘The Danish Way of Parenting’  influenced have influenced how Lizz’s ideas of parenting.

Lizz Adams is a Korean-American writer, actress, and comedian from Detroit. As an improviser you catch her performing improv comedy with her team k3wlazn420. She is excitedly awaiting the birth of her first child.

Growing up she wasn’t sure she wanted kids, once married, Lizz wasn’t in a rush to jump into having babies but during the pandemic, she and her husband decided they were ready.

Lizz feels fortunate to have a supportive community around her which has made the transition toward motherhood easier. She feels like she has the best of both worlds, her friends with kids are happy to have another new mom in the group and her friends without kids are excited to welcome a baby into the mix.

One aspect of pregnancy that did surprise her was how drastic her body changed. She speaks to how society and career have influenced the expectations she puts on her body and the feelings that have come throughout her pregnancy.

It messes with your head because your whole life, you’re told you have to be a certain size.

Another adjustment she didn’t anticipate was the changes in her breasts, including leaking colostrum. She mentions that even through these mental and physical transitions she still feels beautiful and has been enjoying that baby glow.

Lizz reflects on her experience working at a Montessori preschool and the lessons she learned that have become the foundation for how she intends to raise her daughter. She liked how the kids learned at their own pace and are given a lot of freedom to be independent and individual. She finds it to be a self-directed way to empower and promote self-reliance to young children, which she believes is a really rewarding experience.

I think people underestimate what young children are really capable of, all the time. They are so smart.

She also refers to one of her favorite parenting books, ‘The Danish Way of Parenting’, that highlights the concept of having high discipline and setting expectations, but also engaging with a high level of emotional support, and the combination of implementing both in parenting makes for very well adjusted and independent kids.

Lizz talks about the importance of passing along instilled generational values to her daughter, just as her own mother did. She feels grateful that her mother instilled a high level of expectation and sense of self-worth.

Though she can’t quite wrap her head around what the birth experience will be like she cannot wait to become a mother.

I’m just excited to be a mom.
